What is Mapview in vMAP?

A Mapview is a collection of Layers (datasets e.g. points, line, polygons) with style definitions. (See the example mapview below)

How do I create a new mapview?

First, select the newmapviewbutton item in the File button drop down menu, to open Create a new mapview window.

Follow the below five steps to Create a new mapview:

Step 1: Select layer

There are two options here:

  • Option 1: Create a new layer
  • Option 2: Select an existing layer

Option 1: Create a new layer

1. Click the plus button to open the Add new layer window.

2. Enter the Name of your new layer and select the Layer group (The layer group needs to be created in vMAP Admin Center. While if you don't want to group the layer, choose No layer group) to which the new layer belongs, and then choose a Layer Type. Click on the Execute button to save the new layer.

Please note these three fields are mandatory to choose.

3. To load the newly added layer, search its name and click the icon image039. Click the Continue button to next steps.

4. Since there is no data on the new layer at the moment, so you can skip the following steps of Filter, Layer setting, Map legend, directly proceed to Step 5: Select mapview

Option 2: Select an existing layer

To select an existing layer:

1. In the drop-down list of available layers, select one or multiple layers for the new mapview.
2. Click on the icon image028 to display the details of the selected layer at the bottom of the window as shown below.

3. To load the layers to new mapview, proceed the same step as above.

Step 2: Set the "Filter" for datasets

The Filter step is an optional step, which is used to filter datasets on the mapview. Once the filter conditions are set, only the filtered dataset is displayed on the mapview. If you do not need to filter your data, you can skip this step.

For detailed information about the filter function, please check Filter the layer data.

Step 3: Configure layer settings for the mapview

There are five major settings in the Layer settings tab for configuring the mapview. You can cutomise the polygon color, point icons, mapview labeling, and visible map scale. Please check the following articles for detailed operations.

Layer Setting 1: Fill color and color style for polygons

Layer Setting 2: Fill the polygon with patterns

Layer Setting 3: Style point

Layer Setting 4: Add labels for objects on mapview

Layer Setting 5: Advanced Settings for mapview

Step 4: Set "Map Legend" for mapview

Map legend is a visual graphic of the symbols used in a map that tells the map reader what the polygons, lines or points represent. Map legend allows a viewer to understand what the different objects on a Mapview represent, and it can be configured through the maplegendbutton Step from the Create a new mapview Window.

In the screenshot below, different polygons are filled with different colors that represent different levels of population numbers. The active legend is displayed in the Map Legend Panel towards the bottom right of the main Mapview Panel, as seen in the the red box.

In the Map legend step from the Create a new mapview window, you can select and set the Type, Value, Description and Title fields for each legend. Follow these steps to add a map legend to the mapview:

1. The map legend will be based on either Color, Pattern, Icon or Symbols, and then can be selected from the Type drop-down list. (Here we select Color as example)

2. From the Value drop-down list, you can view all the colors of polygons that pre-set in the Layer setting tab. Select color one by one, then add the description for each.

3. To add a new legend, click the add button. The new legend is automatically added to the list on the right side.

(Note: It is important to activate the map legend by checking the checkbox of Active.)

4. Name this map legend panel in the Title input box.

(Tips: To update the Value and Description of a map legend, select the map legend on the right, edit and click the Update button.)

5. After completing setup of the map legend, click the Continue button to move on to the Select mapview step. (An example result is shown in below image)

Option 3. If you have already imported data into layers on the mapview, you can click on the mapview_center icon to set the center of the data to be the center of the mapview.

Step 3. After all the mapview general information is set, click save button to save and generate the new mapview.

After the mapview has been created successfully, you can load the created mapview in vMAP Portal to view it on the main page. You can import data to this mapview, the datasets will be displayed on the background map.
